SANS 10087-1: the safety basics every SA homeowner should know

5 min read

SANS 10087-1 is the South African national standard for LPG installations. It applies to any cylinder installed at a home, school, restaurant or workshop.

The two numbers to remember: 1 metre from any opening (window, door, air vent) and 2 metres from any drain, unprotected electrical point or ignition source. Cylinders under 100kg total also need to be at least 1m from a boundary wall.

Cylinders must stand upright, outdoors, on a firm surface. Never store an LPG bottle in a cupboard under the sink, in a garage without ventilation, or below ground level — LPG is heavier than air and pools in low spaces.

If you have more than 19kg of gas installed, the installation must be certified by a registered LPGSA installer and you must display a Certificate of Conformity (CoC).
